چکیده

LLE Review, Volume 103 128 Introduction A high-performance “planar” Cryogenic Target Handling System has been added to LLE’s OMEGA Laser-Fusion Facility.1 Initially designed for equation of state measurements of liquefied D2, it’s versatility enables studies of Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities, shock timing, and cryogenic hohlraum performance. The system has demonstrated a shot-to-shot cycle interval of less than two hours and has fielded more than 125 experiments using several distinct target types. This article provides an overview of the cryogenic capabilities at LLE and compares the operational requirements of LLE’s spherical and planar cryogenic systems. The unique features of the planar cryogenic system are described, and applications of this technology within the ICF community are discussed.

A stable mid-IR, GaSb-based diode laser source for the cryogenic target layering at the Omega Laser Facility.

A stable 3-microm-wavelength, GaSb-based diode operated at room temperature has been investigated as a potential laser source for cryogenic target layering at the Omega Laser Facility for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. More than 50 mW of output power has been achieved at 14 degrees C with high spectral and output-power stability.

First Results from Cryogenic Target Implosions on OMEGA

LLE Review, Volume 90 49 Introduction The base-line direct-drive ignition target design for the National Ignition Facility (NIF)1 is a thick cryogenic DT-ice layer enclosed in a thin CH shell.2,3 In direct-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF)4 a spherical target is illuminated by a large number of laser beams to provide a spherically symmetric implosion. Target implosions with cryogenic DT f...

Hollow-Shell Implosion Studies on the 60-Beam, UV OMEGA Laser System

82 LLE Review, Volume 78 Direct-drive inertial confinement laser fusion is accomplished by uniformly illuminating spherical fuel-bearing targets with high-power laser beams, ablatively driving implosions that result in large increases in density and temperature. Current large laser systems such as the University of Rochester’s OMEGA laser, which is capable of both directand indirectdrive implos...

Demonstration of the highest deuterium-tritium areal density using multiple-picket cryogenic designs on OMEGA.

The performance of triple-picket deuterium-tritium cryogenic target designs on the OMEGA Laser System [T. R. Boehly, Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997)] is reported. These designs facilitate control of shock heating in low-adiabat inertial confinement fusion targets. Areal densities up to 300 mg/cm2 (the highest ever measured in cryogenic deuterium-tritium implosions) are inferred in the experiments ...

Imprint Reduction Using an Intensity Spike in OMEGA Cryogenic Targets

56 LLE Review, Volume 82 The primary obstacle to the successful implosion of an inertial confinement fusion target is hydrodynamic instability, which can cause the target to disintegrate and prevent it from reaching the high densities and temperatures required for ignition. The imploding target is primarily subject to the Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability, seeded by surface nonuniformity and by ...
